The Red Lodge KOA (406/446-2364 or 800/562-7540, May–Sept., $28 tent, $35 RV), four miles north of town on Highway 212, has a swimming pool and sites for both RVs and tents.

Perry’s RV Park and Campground (406/446-2722, late May–Sept., $20 tent, $30 RV) is on Rock Creek 1.5 miles south of town.

To find Forest Service campgrounds (406/ 446-2103, www.fs.fed.us/r1/custer/, May–Sept., $11), head south on Highway 212. Reach Cascade and Basin campgrounds via Red Lodge Mountain Road, which starts right near the ranger station. These are good spots for hikers heading into the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness.

Farther south on Highway 212, find turnoffs for Sheridan and Ratine. Parkside, Limber Pine, Greenough Lake, and M-K are all part of the Rock Creek Recreation Area 11 miles south of Red Lodge and virtually at the foot of the Beartooth Highway. All of these spots except for Cascade have running water and charge $11 to camp.
