Cabin Creek and Beaver Creek Forest Service campgrounds are on the Highway 287 side of Hebgen Lake.
To the east, Rainbow Point (on the Grayling Arm of Hebgen Lake) and Bakers Hole (on the Madison River above Hebgen Lake) are public campgrounds close to West Yellowstone, and are often full of RVs.
Spring Creek, Rumbaugh Ridge, and Lonesomehurst are Forest Service campgrounds on the less-traveled south shore of Hebgen Lake. Contact the Hebgen Lake Ranger Station (331 Hwy. 191 N., West Yellowstone, 406/823-6961, www.fs.fed.us/r1/gallatin) for details.
A lot of snow falls here in the winter, and virtually all of these places shut down between late September and early May.
Not far removed from camping are the Forest Service cabins (406/823-6961, www.fs.fed.us /r1/gallatin, $30) in the Hebgen Lake area. These cabins are rustic, with outhouses and (in our experience) resident mice.
