The most recent census figures reveal that New England averages slightly higher than the rest of the country in its numbers of Caucasian residents: just above 86 percent, compared to the nation’s 75 percent. The second-largest group of inhabitants in the region is Latino at roughly 6 percent (which is only half the national average), followed by African Americans at approximately 5 percent, and Asian American at nearly 3 percent.

The northern states (Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont) are more predominantly White (96 percent), while the southern states (Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island) are more ethnically mixed (83 percent White). Within the Caucasian demographic of New England, the largest nonmixed groups tend to be Irish, Portuguese, and Polish. The bulk of the region’s Latino population traces its origins to the Caribbean and South America.
