For such a small museum, the jewel box Bruce Museum of Arts and Science (1 Museum Dr., 203/869-0376, www.brucemuseum.org, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Tues.–Sat.; 1–5 p.m. Sun., $7 adults, $6 seniors and students, free children under 5) has a stellar permanent collection. You might not recognize all the names of the artists on display here, but you’ll be wowed by the consistently high quality of their work—and perhaps inspired to add some new favorites to your own list.
Highlights include Girl Feeding Pigeons by Venetian-style painter Alessandro Milesi and The Broken Flower Pot, a cheeky morality tale by Belgian painter Jan Verhas.
The Bruce Museum of Arts and Science also has a significant collection of “Cos Cob Impressionists,” including Childe Hassam, Emil Carlsen and Leonard and Mina Fonda Ochtman, who painted their works only a few miles up the shore.
