Once upon a time, every major American city had at least one trolley line, and most of them had a dozen. With the coming of the automobile, the tracks were ripped up one by one and the trains put out to pasture. Many of them have found their way to the wonderful little Shore Line Trolley Museum (17 River St., East Haven, 203/467-6927, www.bera.org, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Sat.–Sun. Apr.–late May and mid-Sept.–mid-Nov., daily late May–mid-Sept, $8 adults, $6 seniors and students, $4 children 2–15, children under 2 free), which has 100 antique trolley cars and operates a 3-mile train ride along the tracks.
The Shore Line Trolley Museum is open daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day and on weekends during the spring and fall. It is closed January through March.
