Sports and Recreation

The abundance of mountains, lakes, beaches, parks, and ocean all over New England means there is very little recreation that can’t be enjoyed here. Of course, what you do depends on season and geography—in winter, skiers flock to the snowy peaks of the White Mountains in New Hampshire, Maine, and the Green Mountains of Vermont; fall and summer bring hunters, and fishermen, hikers, and mountain bikers to those same trails and streams. (Spring, on the other hand, is often far too muddy for any of the latter.)

Serious sea-lovers head to the coasts and islands of Maine, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts—areas with a longstanding and venerable history of fishing and boating, and plenty of resources to show for it. Meanwhile, the widely varied parks and preservation lands throughout New England are excellent grounds for bird-watching of all kinds, year-round.
