No trip to Acadia is complete without getting out on the water in some way. Luckily, boat operators offer dozens of ways to do that. The four-masted Margaret Todd (207/288-4585, www.downeastwindjammer.com, $35 adult, $33 senior, $25 children 6–11, $5 children 2–5, free children under 2) will give you your windjammer fix with ranger-narrated cruises from Bar Harbor. (Bring a bone for the boat’s first mate, Maggie.)
The smaller lobster sloop Chrissy (207/288-2373, $38 adults, $28 children under 12) sails with a maximum of six passengers. Stop by Maine State Sea Kayak (254 Main St., Southwest Harbor, 877/481-9500, www.mainestatekayak.com) to command a vessel of your own (half-day tour, $44).
Canoes and kayaks from National Park Canoe Rental (Pretty Marsh Rd./Rte. 102, northern tip of Long Pond, 207/244-5854, www.nationalparkcanoerental.com, $44–52/day) plys the gentler waters of Long Pond.
