Many species of animals call this rugged coast home. The most unique is the Atlantic puffin, a colorful seabird that has perhaps unfairly won the nickname “clown of the sea” for its distinctive red-and-orange beak. Bold Coast Charter Company (Cutler, 207/259-4484, www.boldcoast.com, $100 adults, $60 children 14 and under) runs 5-hour trips in-season to Machias Seal Island in search of the gregarious seabirds; knowledgeable guide Andy Patterson explains their ecology en route. Tours leave from the Cutler town harbor; take Route 1 and 191 south into Cutler and look for a blue sign marked “Wharf Road”to locate the launch ramp.

The Bay of Fundy is prime whale-watching territory. Capt. Riddle’s Whale Watch Cruises (727 Friar Bay Rd., 0.5 mile past FDR Parkd., Campobello, New Brunswick, 506/752-2009, www.finback.com, CDN$55 adults, CDN$40 children) makes summertime cruises in search of finback, minke, right, and humpback whales, as well as seals, eagles and other sea creatures. Boats leave from Campobello Island, just over the border in New Brunswick, Canada.
