The moose is the center of attention each spring during the month-long Moose Mainea (207/695-2702, www.mooseheadlake.org, mid-May–mid-June), which features a craft fair, “mooseball” supper, the Moose Tales slideshow, moose-calling demonstrations, Moose River Canoe Race, moose photo contest, and even some moose d’oeuvres to try.
Jack London eat your heart out—every February, 20 sleds compete to be top dog in the 100 Mile Wilderness Sled Dog Race (207/965-8120, www.100milewildernessrace.org), a competition in which teams race from Greenville, up Moosehead Lake, to Brownville and back for their share of a $5,000 purse. Hot chocolate flows at viewing points along the way.
The weekend after Labor Day, hundreds of pontoon planes swoop into the lake for the International Seaplane Fly-In (Greenville, 207/695-2702, www.seaplanefly-in.org), the world’s largest seaplane event. Events include flying and canoeing competitions, educational exhibits, and dancing.
