The island has a few galleries and shops catering to the summer crowd. One of the best places to poke around is Artisan Books & Bindery (509 Pendleton Point Rd., 207/734-6852, www.artisanbooksandbindery.,com), where proprietor Craig Olson stocks a variety of used and rare books, as well as new books by Maine and Islesboro authors (yes, there are some). Be sure to call ahead, as the store’s official hours are “by appointment or chance.”
Italian pottery, jewelry, and Maine-made crafts are part of the selection at Hummingbird Hill (1109 Meadow Pond Rd., 207/734-8193, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. daily), a small but delightful gift shop.
