Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse

The Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse (207/785-4609, www.rocklandlighthouse.com, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. weekends and holidays late May.–mid-Oct., free) earns points for its location—at the end of a mile-long granite breakwater that protects Rockland Harbor. Walking the breakwater is an experience in itself, as sailboats, lobstermen, sea birds, and seals add to the scenery.

Maine Lighthouse Museum

For lighthouse fans, Rockland is also home to the Maine Lighthouse Museum (1 Park Dr., 207/594-3301, www.mainelighthousemuseum.com, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Fri., 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Sat.–Sun. Jun.–Oct.; or by appt., $5 adults, $4 seniors, free children under 12), which bills itself as the country’s most extensive collection of lighthouse paraphernalia. A series of galleries attached to the local chamber of commerce are full of photos, models, lenses, and maps to help you strategize for light-sightseeing up the coast.
