North of Bath, the Maine coast begins in earnest, with Route 1 turning into a two-lane divided highway snaking its way through pine forests and passing farm stands selling fresh berries on the side of the road. The route slows down both literally and figuratively at Wiscasset, a traffic bottleneck that also happens to be the most charming small town on the coast.
The same can’t quite be said of Boothbay Harbor, a summer resort community that’s a study in organized chaos. The Boothbay Peninsula has its appeal, however, as the center for all manner of sailing and nature-cruising expeditions on the surrounding coast.
