Seafood quickly served in a casual setting. That’s the dining genre that Kittery appears to have chosen as its culinary representation, and within those confines, it’s done an admirable enough job. (The better to bring both shopping bags and the whole family.)
At Cap’n Simeon’s Galley (90 Pepperrell Rd./Rte. 103, Kittery Point, 207/439-3655, www.capnsimeons.com, 11:30 a.m.–10 p.m. daily; 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Sun., $7–28), platters of fisherman’s specials (fried clams, cod, and scallops) and fried oysters are served up with an excellent view of the water.
Bob’s Clam Hut (315 Rte. 1, Kittery, 207/439-4233, www.bobsclamhut.com, 11 a.m.–8 p.m. Mon.–Thu.; 11 a.m.–8:30 p.m. Fri.–Sat.; 11 a.m.–7:30 p.m. Sun., $7–29) does its “fryolater” justice with fresh, hot, and crispy fried haddock, calamari, and, of course, clams.
If you’re headed to the beach or on a hike, grab picnic fixings at Beach Pea Baking Co. (53 Rte. 1, 207/439-3555, www.beachpeabaking.com, 7:30 a.m.–6 p.m. Mon.–Sat., $6–9), where all breads are fresh-baked and sandwiches are overstuffed and made-to-order.
