The mile-and-a-quarter paved walking path that skims Ogunquit’s harbor was bequeathed to the town (it was then York) by York resident Josiah Chase in 1923. The path, which runs from Ogunquit beach to a rocky cove, sports the Atlantic’s surf on one side and benches, assorted wild plants, trees, and brush on the other.

The salty air, wide sky, crashing waves, and loud seagulls evoke nature’s raw power, making the path a favorite subject of local artists and nature lovers alike, with an estimated 100,000 visitors every year.

The walkway’s craggy granite overhangs are crowned with trees and bittersweet, which create comfortable alcoves perfect for admiring the ocean’s briny surf. Bayberry bushes and roses, in white and seemingly every shade of pink, perfume the path in summertime.
