The laid-back Hennessy’s (25 Union St., 617/742-2121, 11 p.m.–1 a.m. Mon.–Sat.; 12 p.m.–12 a.m. Sun., www.somerspubs.com/) is carefully crafted to evoke a Victorian roadside tavern, with a selection of Irish whiskies and occasional Celtic music that draws an expat Irish crowd.
A reliable pour of Guinness and raucous live fiddlers can be found at The Black Rose (160 State St., 617/742-2286, 12 p.m.–2 a.m. Mon.–Sat.; 12 p.m.–1 a.m. Sun., www.irishconnection.com), an Irish pub near Faneuil Hall that is a favorite with tourists. Pictures of Hibernian writers line the walls, and hearty fare such as corned beef and fish-and-chips is served.
Located inside the Omni Parker House, The Last Hurrah (60 School St., 617/725-1888, 10 a.m.–1 a.m. Mon.–Sat.; 1 p.m.–1 a.m. Sun., www.omnihotels.com) is named after a book about one of Boston’s most notorious politicians, “Rascal King” James Michael Curley. Its elegant, plant-filled room is a hangout for City Hall types and Financial District suits, who trade favors and stock tips over martinis.
