The landmark church at the corner of Park and Tremont Streets is one of the most recognizable meeting places downtown. Dating from 1809, the Park Street Church (1 Park St., 617/523-3383, www.parkstreet.org) touts itself as the location of the first Sunday School and first place where the song America (My Country’Tis of Thee) was publicly sung.
During the War of 1812, the Park Street Church was known as “brimstone corner” for the gunpowder stored in the basement. Later, the brimstone came from the fiery speeches of its ministers, a tradition continued by its current evangelical congregation.
