Located across Fort Point Channel from downtown, the South Boston waterfront district is a neighborhood in transition. For years, it has been home to New England’s largest community of artists, who have taken advantage of the solid warehouses that once housed the stores for Boston’s wool trade to build artist studios and performance spaces. The neighborhood itself is a visual artist’s dream, with open spaces broken by iron girders and views of the harbor. As downtown has become built up however, the newly christened Seaport District is the next development frontier, with cranes and bulldozers furiously breaking ground on new hotels, condo buildings, and a gargantuan new convention center. After years of negotiating, the artists have been worked into the plan, and a new urban neighborhood is taking shape that retains its urban edge and allows conventioneers to walk to stores and galleries sprouting up in old buildings.
