The tide ponds and lagoons around the island are perfect for maneuvering in and out of by kayak. Island Spirit Kayak (Oak Bluffs, 508/693-9727, www.islandspiritkayak.com) leads paddling tours that emphasize island geology and wildlife, and also rents boats ($35 for a half-day single kayak to $250 for weeklong double sea kayak), delivered to the beach or pond of your choice.
For anglers, the Skipper (Oak Bluffs Harbor, 508/693-1238, www.mvskipper.com, half-day trips $50 adults, $40 children 12 and under) bills itself as a “party fishing boat,” which takes family-friendly trips in search of sea-bass and fluke.
Serious fishermen can ride along with Surf Master Charter Fishing (6 Mariners Circle, 508/400-9208, trips are 7–11:30 a.m. and 1–5:30 p.m., $100 deposit), which goes after bluefish, tuna, and—for Jaws fans—shark.
