Local thespians date the beginning of American drama to 1916, when the first Eugene O’Neill play was performed on P-Town’s Lewis Wharf. The theater community was reborn in 2001 with the construction of the beautiful 200-seat Provincetown Theater (238 Bradford St., 508/487-7487, www.provincetowntheater.org, $20–75), which stages everything from campy musicals to heart-wrenching original dramas.

On Friday nights, the shirts come off at The Atlantic House (4–6 Masonic Pl., 508/487-3821, www.ahouse.com), P-Town’s premier gay nightclub for two decades, with a main club and smaller “macho room” for fans of leather and Levis.

No matter what you’re looking for, you’ll find it (and maybe more than you bargained for) at The New Crown & Anchor (247 Commercial St., 508/487-1430, www.onlyatthecrown.com), an entertainment complex with a high-energy dance club, “video bar,” leather bar, and cabaret that caters to a mix of queer and straight clientele.

Across the street, The Governor Bradford (312 Commercial St., 508/487-2781) draws a mix of tourists and locals for weekend karaoke led by a caustic drag queen.

Meanwhile, lesbian women and their friends head to Vixen (336 Commercial St., 508/487-6424) for dancing, pool, and sometimes cabaret and folk music performances.
