As a primarily residential community, the South Shore has only a small handful of noteworthy nightlife destinations. For concerts of almost every stripe (from Julio Iglesias to Ani DiFranco), there’s the South Shore Music Center Circus (130 Sohier St., Cohasset, 781/383-9850, www.themusiccircus.org, summer only).

Year-round, Eli’s Pub in The Barker Tavern (21 Barker Rd., Scituate, 781/545-6533, www.barkertavern.com,4 p.m.–10 p.m., Tues.–Fri.; 5 p.m.–10 p.m. Sat.; 1 p.m.–10 p.m., $12–15) is a cozy and convivial spot for a drink on weeknights and weekends. The historic harborside watering hole is full of local couples, boat lovers, and chatty singles.

Autumn brings the South Shore’s cranberry bogs to a brilliant red hue, and aside from sampling the tart little treasures, there’s but one way to celebrate: at October’s National Cranberry Festival held at Edaville Railroad (7 Eda Ave., South Carver, 877/332-8455, www.edaville.com, $18, free children under 2), where you can ride an antique steam train through a working berry bog.
