The popular student hangout has many vegetarian options.

A wide variety of homemade cookies and pastries is available at Tunnel City Coffee (100 Spring St., 413/458-5010, 6:30 a.m.–6:30 p.m., daily), which serves coffee roasted in North Adams and abounds in comfortable couches and armchairs. Gourmet takeout-pizza joint Hot Tomatoes (100 Water St., 413/458-2722, http://hottomatoespizza.com, 11 a.m.–10 p.m. daily) has mastered the art of Neapolitan pizza, with cracker-thin crust and fresh, chunky tomato sauce.

If the weather’s nice, the adjoining park is a nice place for a picnic and a stroll. The village’s culinary jewel is Mezze Bistro + Bar (16 Water St., 413/458-0123, www.mezzerestaurant.com, 5–9 p.m. Sun.–Thu.; 5–10 p.m. Fri.–Sat.), which blends equal parts Manhattan (leather banquettes, soft lighting, stiff martinis) and the Berkshires (birch-tree columns). A rotating menu includes such specialties as roasted skate with chanterelles.
