This region abounds in cheap lodging, from roadside motels to family-owned bed-and-breakfasts. One of the best is Maple House B&B (51 Middletown Hill Rd., Rowe, 413/339-0107, www.maplehousebb.com, $60–100), an 18th-century farmhouse situated on acres of scenic grounds with a beautiful view of the mountains. Friendly hosts Rebecca and Michael Bradley provide five rooms filled with homemade quilts and wall-hangings, as well as a full breakfast.

Not to be confused with Maple House, Six Maple Street B&B (6 Maple St., Shelburne Falls, 413/625-6807, www.sixmaplestreet.com, Fri.–Sun. May–Nov. only, $90–100) is in a colonial home built by one of the original settlers of Shelburne Falls, and one of the only places to stay within walking distance of town. The low-ceilinged rooms are filled with antique bottles, clocks, and books. Baths are shared and children are not allowed.

$100–150

Set up on a hill overlooking the trail, The Warfield House Inn (200 Warfield Rd., Charlemont, 413/339-6600 or 888/339-8439, www.warfieldhouseinn.com, $100–125) is the area’s most unique place to stay. Part working family farm, part country resort, the bed-and-breakfast offers a chance to meet cows, llamas, and emus. Rooms in the two converted farmhouses are simply decorated, but include access to common fireplaces and hot tubs.
