Boating
The white water of the Deerfield River provides the best terrain for kayaking and rafting in southern New England. Two companies have mastered the river. The original pioneer of the Deerfield is Zoar Outdoor (7 Main St., Charlemont, 800/532-7483, www.zoaroutdoor.com, Apr.–Oct., rafting $78–95/day), which runs a popular 10-mile rafting trip through the raging Zoar Gap, along with other weekend and day trips on the river. It also leads canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, and biking trips.
The Maine-based Crab Apple White Water (2056 Mohawk Trail/Rte. 2, Charlemont, 800/553-7238, www.crabapplewhitewater.com, Apr.–Oct., rafting $40–107/day) also offers half- and full-day rafting and inflatable kayak trips on the Deerfield, as well as other rivers throughout New England. It prides itself on its riverside cooking.
Hiking
Several trailheads leave from in and around Shelburne Falls, including an easy walk to the scenic High Ledges picnic area, and a more rugged five-mile riverside footpath along the Mahican-Mohawk Trail. Maps are available at the town information center.
