As much as it dominates the middle of the state, Lake Winnipesaukee is hardly the only lake around. More than 200 other bodies of water are scattered around the area west of Lake Winni, many of them offering a much quieter and more secluded vacation experience.

Even the next biggest lake in New Hampshire, Sunapee Lake, is like a trip back to a bygone era, abounding with quiet coves and relaxing beaches and campgrounds. Even farther west, the area along the Connecticut River is dominated by the cultural mecca of Hanover, home to Dartmouth College and several fine museums.

Getting to New Hampshire’s Western Lakes

To drive to Sunapee Lake from Concord, take I-89 north to exit 12, then Route 103B south, and look for the sign for Sunapee Harbor (40 mi., 50 min.). For Lebanon, take I-89 north from Concord to exit 18, then take Route 120 south (55 mi., 1 hr.). For Hanover, take the same exit, but take Route 120 north (60 mi., 1 hr. 5 min.). To get to Claremont, take Route 103 west from Sunapee (15 mi., 25 min.) or Route 120 south from Lebanon (15 mi., 25 min.).
