A true greasy spoon if there ever was one, Daddypops Tumble Inn Diner (1 Main St., Claremont, 603/542-0074, 6 a.m.–2 p.m. daily year-round, $4–9) has a near-cult following for its no-frills, authentic diner atmosphere. The huge plates of hash browns, burgers, and omelets may not be miraculous, but they come fast and at a good price.

Even more retro than all that, Jean Marie’s Candy Works (16 Opera House Sq., Claremont, 603/542-2229, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Tues.–Sat.; 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Sun.; closed Mon., $2–6) operates as an old-fashioned soda fountain. Step up to one of the booths and take your pick between milkshakes, sundaes, and cones.

Yet more comfort food is on the menu at Hullabaloo Cafe (32 Pleasant St., Claremont, 603/542-5747, 5 p.m.–11 p.m. Mon.–Sat.; 3 p.m.–9 p.m. Sun, $6–13), a coffee shop that recently reinvented itself as a martini bar. In between swigs, nosh on homemade soups, salads, and wraps, and kick back to the nightly live music.
