The Basin
The result of the glacial sculptors who worked over the mountains can be seen in several other places as well. Also located within Franconia Notch State Park, The Basin (I-93, exit 34A, 603/745-8391, www.nhstateparks.org) is a 20-foot-wide glacial pothole worn away by rocks and sand swirling in the Pemigewassett River 15,000 years ago. Located at the base of Cannon Mountain, the site includes a curious natural sculpture known as the “Old Man’s Foot.”
Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves
A few miles west of North Woodstock, the Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves (Rte. 112, Kinsman Notch, 603/745-8031, www.findlostriver.com, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. daily May–mid-Oct.; until 5 p.m. July–Aug., $14 adults, $10 children 4–12, free children under 4) is another glacier-formed gorge, with the notable distinction that the river here mostly flows underground. Boardwalks take visitors into the caves to see moss-covered chambers and underground waterfalls right out of an Indiana Jones movie.
