Originally part of Newport until 1743, Middletown is a relatively sleepy town, home to about 17,000 people. But in contrast to Newport, there isn’t a lot to do here except relax and admire the area’s pristine beaches, historic homes, and natural scenery.
If that’s your idea of an ideal sojourn, you’ve come to the right place. Most visitors make their way here from Newport for the day, for either one of the beaches or the area’s excellent bird-watching at the local bird sanctuary.
Save the Bay Aquarium Exploration Center
If you’ve got kids in tow, there’s a miniature aquatic petting zoo awaiting them at Save the Bay Aquarium Exploration Center (175 Memorial Blvd., 401/324-6020, www.savebay.org, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. daily late May–early Sept., $5 adults and children, free children under 3). The educational facility is filled with tanks of local marine life and, while not big enough to offer an entire day’s worth of activity, makes for a fun stop on the way to or from abutting Easton’s Beach.
Food
There’s above average sushi to be found at Sea Shai (747 Aquidneck Ave., Middletown, 401/849-5180, and Long Wharf Mall, Newport, 401/841-0051, www.seashai.com, 11:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. and 5–10 p.m. daily, $8–22), known for feather-light tempura, fresh sashimi, and decent Korean dishes such as classic bulgogi (sliced barbecue beef).
