Brattleboro Museum & Art Center
In 2004, an exhibit of never-before-seen Andy Warhol paintings put the small Brattleboro Museum & Art Center (10 Vernon St., 802/257-0124, www.brattleboromuseum.org, 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Wed.–Mon., May–Feb., $4 adults, $3 seniors, $2 students, free children under 6) on the art map. Its shows are rarely so impressive; but the center is worth a look for its unusual location in a renovated train depot, as well as for its provocative exhibitions of contemporary American art, often featuring leading artists from around New England.
Estey Organ Museum
Harkening back to the past, Estey Organ Museum (108 Birge St., Brattleboro, 802/246-8366, www.esteyorganmuseum.org, noon–4 p.m. Sat.–Sun. June 13–Columbus Day, $3), which celebrates Brattleboro’s century-long history as home to the largest organ-making factory in the world. The Estey Organ Company once employed more than 500 people and produced half a million organs; its former engine house now displays reed, pipe, and electronic versions along with exhibits on the history of the craft.
