Another up-and-coming Brooklyn neighborhood can be found in Fort Greene. Come to Fort Greene for the amazing Brooklyn Flea (176 Layfeyette Ave., www.brownstoner.com/brooklynflea, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Sat.) and you’ll find it’s well worth the trip. This flea market full of local artisans and crafts people and over 150 vendors showcases what the new Brooklyn is all about: artisan food, local crafts, hip artists, vintage gear, and music.
If you prefer sit down to stall and stroll, The General Greene (229 DeKalb Ave., at Claremont Ave., 718/222 1510) offers fresh interpretations of seasonal American comfort foods or try Bonita (243 DeKalb Ave., at Vanderbilt Ave., 718/622 5300) for simple Mexican food.
Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)
BAM (30 Lafayette Ave., at Atlantic and Flatbush Aves., 718/636-4100, www.bam.org) is a world-famous institution that’s especially known for its avant-garde productions. BAM also holds several small movie theaters, presenting mostly foreign and art films, and the inviting BAMcafé, serving everything from gourmet sandwiches to simple entrées.
