Just west of Southampton, the Shinnecock Reservation (631/283-6143, www.shinnecocknation.com) is home to about 400 Native Americans and the Shinnecock Nation Cultural Center and Museum (Montauk Hwy. at West Gate Rd., 631/287-4923, www.shinnecock-museum.org, 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Wed.–Sun., adults $5, seniors $4, children under 12 free). Opened in 2001, the museum showcases historic birch-bark canoes and farm implements, beadwork, basketry, weavings, photographs, and an informative video.
Visitors are also welcome to attend the annual Shinnecock Pow Wow, held on Labor Day weekend. This major event attracts Native Americans from all over the country. Traditional dances, foods, and arts and crafts are featured.
