Heading east onto the North Fork via the northern route of Sound Avenue (which turns into Route 48), you’ll soon come to Briermere Farms (4414 Sound Ave., at Rte. 105, 631/722-3931, www.briermere.com). Especially well known for its homemade pies, Briermere features about 15 different pie varieties on any given day, ranging from the standard blueberry and peach to the more unusual blackberry-apple and strawberry-rhubarb.
Near the intersection of Sound Avenue and Herricks Lane is the Hallockville Museum Farm and Folklife Center (6038 Sound Ave./Rte. 48, 631/298-5292, www.hallockville.com, 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Fri.–Sun., adults $7, seniors and children 6–12 $4), a 102-acre farm that was owned by the Hallock family for over 200 years.
Now a museum listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Hallockville centers on a 1765 homestead, a large barn, a smokehouse, and a shoemaker’s shop (in which one Capt. Zachariah Hallock made over 1,700 pairs of shoes between the years 1771 and 1820). The museum also stages frequent crafts demonstrations, festivals, and workshops.
