After a two-year stint in Queens, during which time its home was renovated and enlarged by architect Yoshio Taniguchi, the famed Museum of Modern Art (11 W. 53rd St., between 5th and 6th Aves., 212/708-9400, www.moma.org, 10:30 a.m.–5:30, closed Tues., adults $20, seniors $16, students $12, children under 16 free) fills 620,000 square feet, with a bustling promenade, 110-foot atrium, sky-lit galleries, and fine-dining restaurant, The Modern.
One of the world’s foremost museums of modern art, MoMA opened in 1929, shortly after the crash of the stock market. The museum’s collection includes over 150,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, and architectural models, and some 22,000 films, videos, and media works.
Among its many famous holdings are Cezanne’s The Bather, van Gogh’s Starry Night, Rousseau’s The Sleeping Gypsy, Magritte’s The Empire of Light, Hopper’s Gas, Rothko’s Red, Brown and Black, de Chirico’s The Song of Love, Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, and Monet’s Water Lilies.
MoMA screens films from its superb collection in two downstairs theaters. Ticket price is included in museum admission.
