By Air
Most major U.S. airlines and many foreign carriers offer regularly scheduled flights into New York City’s La Guardia (LGA, Flushing, NY, 718-533-3400), John F. Kennedy (JFK, Jamaica, NY, 718/244-4444), or Newark International airports (EWR, Newark, NJ, 973/961-6000). Several major U.S. airlines also offer flights to other cities in the state, including Albany (ALB, 737 Albany Shaker Road, Albany, 518/242-2200, www.albanyairport.com), Rochester (ROC, 1200 Brooks Ave., Rochester, 585/753-7001, www.monroecounty.gov), Islip (ISP, 100 Arrivals Ave., Ronkonkoma, Long Island, 631/467-3210, www.macarthurairport.com), and Buffalo (BUF, 4200 Genesee St., Buffalo, 716/630-6000, www.buffaloairport.com).
Bargain air fares for international travelers are often available. Most are APEX (advance purchase excursion) fares requiring advance purchase, with minimum and maximum stays.
By Train
Amtrak (800/872-7245, www.amtrak.com) offers service between New York City’s Pennsylvania Station and Niagara Falls, with stops in Croton-Harmon, Poughkeepsie, Rhinecliff, Hudson, Albany-Rensselaer, Schenectady, Amsterdam, Utica, Rome, Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo. Amtrak also travels between New York City and Montreal, Canada, making stops in Croton-Harmon, Poughkeepsie, Rhinecliff, Hudson, Albany-Rensselaer, Schenectady, Saratoga Springs, Fort Edward-Glens Falls, Whitehall, Ticonderoga, Port Henry, Westport, Port Kent, Plattsburgh, and Rouses Point.
Metro-North (212/532-4900 or 800/638-7646, http://www.mta.info/mnr), a commuter railroad, offers service between New York City’s Grand Central Station and the Hudson Valley region, while the Long Island Rail Road (718/217-5477 or 516/822-5477, www.lirr.org) offers service between New York City’s Penn Station and Long Island.
By Bus
Greyhound (800/231-2222, www.greyhound.com) offers regular bus service to major cities and popular tourist destinations throughout the state. Adirondack-Pine Hill Trailways (800/225-6815) and New York Trailways (800/295-5555) also service major cities, as well as a variety of rural areas; the two Trailways are branches of the same company (www.trailways.com).
