Heading south of Romulus on Route 96, you’ll come to the hamlet of Ovid, astride a small ridge surrounded by farmland. In the heart of the village stand three red-brick Greek Revival buildings known as the Three Bears because of how they diminish progressively in size. The “Papa Bear” was once the county courthouse; “Mama Bear,” the village library; and “Baby Bear,” the county jail. Today, the buildings house county offices.
Accommodations and Camping
Off Route 89 overlooking Cayuga Lake is Sned-Acres Campground (6590 Cayuga Lake Rd., 607/869-9787), a good place for families, as it’s equipped with a playground and miniature golf course.
Nearby lies the Driftwood Inn (Rte. 89, Sheldrake-on-Cayuga, 607/532-4324, $105–145 d), offering four guest rooms in the main house, two efficiency units, and two housekeeping cottages. Out front is a 260-foot-long waterfront equipped with small boats and views of the lake.
The Tillinghast Manor B&B (7246 S. Main St., 607/869-3584, $85–100) is a palatial Victorian mansion with a square central tower, an inviting porch, and a large circular drive. Inside you’ll find a grand walnut staircase and five spacious guest rooms with king-size beds.
