In Woodlawn Cemetery (1200 Walnut St., 607/732-0151, dawn–dusk daily), Samuel Clemens is buried in the Langdon family plot, along with his wife, his father-in-law, and his son-in-law Ossip Gabrilowitsch, a noted Russian-born pianist. A 12-foot-high monument commemorates the two famous men.
Adjacent to the main cemetery is the Woodlawn National Cemetery (1825 Davis St., 607/732-5411, dawn–dusk daily), containing the graves of the 2,963 Confederate soldiers who died in the Elmira prison. Surrounding the Confederate graves are the graves of 322 Union soldiers.
When families came north to retrieve their loved ones, they saw what respect had been afforded the soldiers and many made the decision to leave them in their resting place.
