One of the oldest restaurants in the Finger Lakes (Franklin Roosevelt and Charles Lindbergh once ate here), Krebs (53 W. Genesee St., 315/685-5714, open May–Oct. for dinner only), is most famous for its seven-course continental dinners ($44 per person), but also serves lighter fare. Three basic entrés are served—chicken, lobster, and prime rib—along with homemade soups and baked goods. Out back is a formal garden while upstairs is a low-ceilinged tavern where locals congregate.

The laid-back Doug’s Fish Fry (8 Jordan St., 315/685-3288) is a local favorite, renowned for its chowder, fried scallops, gumbo, and fish sandwiches.

Rosalie’s Cucina (841 W. Genesee St., 315/685-2200, $17) offers first-rate Italian fare, ranging from pizza and pasta to grilled lobster tails, in an adobe taverna. For fresh Japanese food in a peaceful setting, step into Kabuki (12 W. Genesee St., 315/685-7234, $8–20).

In addition to great accommodations, the Sherwood Inn and Mirbeau Inn are also excellent dining choices. The restaurant at the Mirbeau (851 W. Genesee St., 315/685-5006 or 877/647-2328, www.mirbeau.com) serves creative American cuisine that uses fresh local ingredients. The menu often changes daily; four- and five-course prix fixe dinners cost $49–54.

The restaurant at the Sherwood Inn (26 W. Genesee St., 315/685-3405, www.thesherwoodinn.com, $15) features traditional American fare. Check out the Patisserie (4 Hannum St., 315/685-2433) which provides all the breads for the Sherwood Inn, a perfect stop for a great morning coffee and pastry.
