In Frederick Law Olmsted’s South Park reigns the pristine white Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens (2655 South Park Ave., at McKinley Pkwy., 716/827-1584, www.buffalogardens.com, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Tues.–Sun., adults $6, seniors and students $5, children $3, under 6 free), all domes, semicircular windows, and sheets of glass.
Designed by the famed greenhouse architectural firm of Lord and Burnham in the 1890s, the conservatory is actually 12 small connected greenhouses. Each specializes in a different plant variety—bromeliads, orchids, cacti, fruit trees.
In the center of things soars a pale-green glass dome crowded with palms. Outside flourish acres of shrubs and flowering plants.
