From the corner of Mt. Hope and Elmwood Avenues extends the extravagant Mount Hope Cemetery (entrance at 1133 Mt. Hope Ave.), a landscaped oasis of green strewn with knobby hills, ancient trees, marble tombs, and elaborate mausoleums. One of the oldest cemeteries in the country, established in 1838, Mt. Hope contains the graves of every Rochesterian who was anyone, including Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony.
An 1874 neo-Romanesque gatehouse marks the cemetery entrance, while just inside are a Gothic chapel and a white Moorish gazebo. The Douglass grave is off East Avenue near the northern end of the cemetery; the Anthony grave is off Indian Trail Avenue at the far northern end.
Maps to the cemetery are available at the Rochester Convention and Visitors Bureau. Friends of Mt. Hope Cemetery (585/461-3494, www.fomh.org) offers guided walking tours on Saturdays in the spring, summer, and fall.
