If you intend to ride a motorcycle or bicycle in Nicaragua, be sure to bring a helmet, an item largely ignored by Nicaraguans, many of whom manage to fit a family of four on one bike. Good quality helmets are not easy to purchase in Nicaragua. If biking, keep your eyes on the road; the entrances to Matagalpa and Granada have unmarked speed bumps which serve as invisible bike-launchers-of-death.
Biking Central America is a breathtaking experience (not just because of the heat!) but puts you at risk in a couple of new ways. We have met dozens of thru-bikers, who report that Nicaragua is no better nor worse than the rest of Central America.
Small shoulders at roadside are par for the course, as is the occasional bottle-throwing idiot careening by in a fast car. Travelers have reported some harassment and even robbery of bikers in the stretch between San Juan del Sur and the Costa Rican border.
