Somoza’s former personal summer palace was converted into a resort in the 1980s and since being purchased by Barceló Resorts is now Montelimar Beach (tel. 505/2269-6769 or 505/2269-6752, U.S. and Canada tel. 800/227-2356, www.barcelomontelimarbeach.com, $72–135 per person), an all-inclusive five-star resort.
It offers 88 double guest rooms with queen-size beds and 205 bungalows with king-size beds, private bath, air-conditioning, TV, strongbox, and minibar. The price includes 24 hours of unlimited feasting, drinking, swimming, and playing.
Often crowded during weekends with visitors from Managua, it is more peaceful on weekdays when you can swim in the largest pool in Central America by yourself. The Montelimar compound is enormous, with multiple beachside bars, sports, and a spunky coed crew of “animators” to help you have a good time. It also has facilities for groups and conventions, plus airport shuttles, shopping, casino, travel agency, etc.
Getting to Barceló Montelimar Beach
Any bus to Pochomíl will also get you to Montelimar, and there are various tour operators that arrange for transfers from Managua airport or hotels. Ask about deep off-season discounts.
