This picturesque bay and community at the extreme southwestern tip of Nicaragua is still more of a fishing town than a tourist destination, but curious visitors can seek out the rural tourism cooperative, Community Tours (tel. 505/8846-2272, communitytours [at] yahoo [dot] es), for tours of the area and nearby bays—along with simple accommodations.
All trips are about four hours and have a local guide, whether by boat or horseback. A portion of the profits goes toward 30 university scholarships for promising youths of the community.
Buses from Rivas to Ostional pass through the San Juan del Sur market at 1 p.m., 4 p.m., and 5 p.m. (two hours to Ostional). They depart the center of Ostional at 5 a.m., 7:30 a.m., and 4 p.m., but confirm with the driver and anyone else you can find waiting around.
