Christened by a 1909 opening performance of Aida, the Teatro Alcalá houses a treasury of Romantic-era art. Above the foyer, a sumptuous marble staircase rises to a bas-relief medallion allegorizing the triumph of art. Inside, soaring above the orchestra, a heavenly choir of muses, representing the arts, decorates the ceiling.

From the back of the cathedral, head right one block along Independencia to the corner of Independencia and Cinco de Mayo to get to Alcalá theater (900 Independencia, tel. 951/516-8312 or 951/516-8344, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. daily, admission free except during events).

Check at the theater box office for a list of performances, which customarily include classical ballet, folkloric dance, opera, and orchestral music.
