Tour buses usually skip Ejutla de Crespo (pop. 20,000) because of its distance, about 36 miles (59 km, one hour) from Oaxaca City. This is a pity, because Ejutla (ay-HOOT-lah) hides some surprises, not the least of which is its huge, colorful Thursday market.
Folks troop in from country villages all over the huge Ejutla governmental district and farther, to haggle over everything from hamacas and huaraches to radios and refrigerators.
Moreover, Ejutla also offers accommodations, at Hotel 6, the graceful hacienda-turned-hotel at the south edge of town.
