Several sources around the plaza offer things to eat. For fruits and vegetables, go to the market on the plaza’s north side. A convenient grocery source is Abarrotes El Centro (tel. 954/524-0060, 8 a.m.–10 p.m. daily), on the plaza’s northeast corner across Revolución from the market. Hearty country-style food, always wholesome if hot, is available at fondas in the market.
The few good restaurants are mostly confined to the hotels. Fanciest in town is the restaurant in the Hotel del Carmen (tel. 954/524-0004, about 7:30 a.m.–10 p.m. seasonally, $3–7), on Antonio Valdez half a block north of the church, with a good standard menu of soups, sandwiches, meats, poultry, and Mexican specialties.
For a homier option, go to the restaurant
La Angelita (tel. 954/524-0073, 7 a.m.–10 p.m. daily, $2–5), in the Hotel Posada los Ángeles, opposite the church on the plaza’s northeast corner. Here, the friendly female hotel owner supplies patrons with tasty local-style desayunos, comidas, and cenas (breakfasts, lunches, and suppers).
