Redmond makes its mark on the culinary world more by the quality of the local Juniper Grove goat cheese and its locally raised Kobe beef than by its restaurants, but there are a few good places to eat.

Madaline’s Grill (2414 S. U.S. 97, 541/548-9964, 6 a.m.–11 p.m. Mon.–Fri., 7 a.m.–11 p.m. Sat.–Sun., $7–23) is a bright spot, with a strong Mexican theme that doesn’t exclude a good selection of crepes, grilled fish dishes, and steaks. The wide-ranging menu makes a nod toward healthy eating, with lean meats and healthier burritos featured.

Madaline’s sister restaurant, Diego’s Spirited Kitchen (447 SW 6th St., 541/316-2002, 11:30 a.m.–9 p.m. daily, $13–25) is more upscale, emphasizing Southwestern cuisine with French and Italian influences. Pork osso bucco slow-roasted with mushrooms is served over mashed potatoes with truffle oil.

A couple of local train stations have been transformed into restaurants. Near the Redmond airport, the Red Dog Depot (3716 SW 21st Place, 541/923-6400, 11 a.m.–10 p.m. daily, $7–13) is a family- and dog-friendly brewpub run by Cascade Lakes Brewery, with a good menu of pub food and a wall of framed 8-by-10 photos of customers’ dogs (come prepared to show off your own pup). Cascade Lakes’s other pub, the Seventh Street Brew House (855 SW 7th St., 541/923-1795, 11:30 a.m.–11 p.m. Mon.–Thurs., 11:30 a.m.–midnight Fri.–Sat., noon–9 p.m. Sun., $7–10), is just a block off busy 6th Street and serves pizza and pub food.

On the road to Smith Rock, the Terrebone Depot (400 NW Smith Rock Way, Terrebonne, 541/548-5030, 11:30 a.m.–8:30 p.m. Sun.–Mon. and Wed.–Thurs., 11:30 a.m.–9 p.m. Fri.–Sat., $8–22), located on the road to Smith Rock, offers fresh food, including a good selection of vegetarian options and pizza, in the gorgeously renovated historic Terrebonne train depot. Climbers and hikers can also get picnic lunches to go.
