Right in the heart of downtown Sisters, upstairs from an antiques shop, the Grand Palace Hotel (101 E. Cascade St., 541/549-2211, $89 and up) has renovated rooms in a historic hotel. Each of the five suites was inspired by one of the owners’ children (don’t worry—the kids are grown, so there aren’t any kiddy themes) and they all offer at least rudimentary cooking facilities. The two-bedroom suites are nice for families or groups of friends traveling together, and a couple of the suites have full kitchens.

Sisters Motor Lodge (511 W. Cascade St., 541/549-2551, $89 and up) is within easy walking distance of the shops and boutiques of Sisters. Beds are decorated with quilts, and the kitchenettes have charmingly retro appliances and Formica tables; pets are allowed in some guest rooms.

The Best Western Ponderosa Lodge (505 U.S. 20, 541/549-1234 or 888/549-4321, www.bestwesternsisters.com, $115 and up) is a large ranch-style resort motel set back from the road in the scattered pines. Rooms feature private balconies with views of the mountains and the adjacent Deschutes National Forest. Other amenities include a spa, a heated pool, and free continental breakfast.

Located eight miles west of Sisters on U.S. 20, Black Butte Ranch (541/595-6211 or 800/452-7455, www.blackbutteranch.com, $120 and up) sits in line with other Cascade peaks in a setting of ponderosa pines, lush meadows, and aspen-lined streams. Over 16 miles of trails thread through the 1,800 acres of forested grounds. Accommodations include deluxe hotel-type bedrooms, 1–3-bedroom condominium suites, and resort homes. The resort includes golf courses, bike trails, tennis courts, and a fitness center with yoga and other classes.

Right on the edge of town is Sisters’s newest resort, the FivePine Lodge (1021 Desperado Tr., 541/549-5900, www.fivepinelodge.com, $189 and up) is a lovely lodge with convention-center facilities and an environmentally sensitive approach. Stay in a spacious suite in the large stone-and-timber lodge or in a classy craftsman-style cabin with Amish-built wood furniture (pets are permitted in a couple of the cabins). All accommodations include breakfast, a wine reception, and access to the on-site Sisters Athletic Club, which has a 25-yard lap pool and a variety of fitness classes. Also in the FivePine complex you will find a spa, a brewpub, and the excellent Chloe at FivePine restaurant.

A lovely place to enjoy Sisters is at the Blue Spruce Bed & Breakfast (444 S. Spruce St., 541/549-9644 or 888/328-9644, www.bluesprucebandb.com, $169 and up). Designed and built from the ground up as a B&B, the four guest rooms here all have their own theme. All bathrooms have a towel warmer, a shower, and a two-person whirlpool tub. Guest rooms are clean, bright, big, well apportioned, and all come equipped with a fridge stocked with complimentary water and sodas. Throw in laundry facilities for guests and a great country breakfast, and it’s clear this is a good value.

Lake Creek Lodge (13375 SW Forest Service Rd. 1419, Camp Sherman, 541/595-6331 or 800/797-6331, www.lakecreeklodge.com, $145–390, about $50 less off-season) is located near Camp Sherman in the nearby Metolius Recreation Area. This full-service resort has individual houses and cottages that vary in price depending on the unit and the number of people. Tennis, swimming, and fishing are some of the many activities available. Although the cabins have kitchenettes, many summertime guests like to eat at least one dinner at the lodge restaurant (8–11 a.m. and at 7 p.m. Tues.–Sat., 8 a.m.–noon and at 6 p.m. Sun. July–early Sept., dinner $24–38 adults, $12 children under 10); dinner is served family-style on the deck or in the pine-paneled main lodge and features a different selection of entrées each day, complemented by homemade breads, salads, and desserts. Lake Creek caters especially well to families; pets are allowed in selected cabins.

Another Metolius retreat can be found at Cold Springs Resort (25615 Cold Springs Resort Lane, Camp Sherman, 541/595-6271, www.coldsprings-resort.com, $162 and up). The cabins feature naturally pure artesian well water. A footbridge across the Metolius River connects the resort to Camp Sherman, where groceries, a church, and a café are within easy walking distance. Pets are allowed for $8 per night but must be kept on a leash at all times and never left unattended.

The cabins at the Metolius River Lodges (12390 SW Forest Service Rd. 1419-700, 541/595-6290 or 800/595-6290, www.metoliusriverlodges.com, $109 and up) are tucked in by the Metolius River right near the Camp Sherman store. The most coveted pair have decks extending over the river, and the majority have fireplaces and kitchens.

Wedged between giant ponderosa pines and the banks of the Metolius are the 12 elegant cabins of the Metolius River Resort (25551 SW Forest Service Rd. 1419, 541/595-6281 or 800/818-7688, www.metoliusriverresort.com, $235). These beautiful wooden structures are bright and airy with lots of windows. The cabins are two stories high with more than 900 square feet of living space, comfortably sleep 4–6 people, and feature a fully equipped modern kitchen, full bath, river-rock fireplace stocked with all the firewood you’ll need, and a river-view deck. Reservations made well in advance are a must. You’ll find the resort behind the Kokanee Cafe.

A few miles west of the Metolius River turnoff on U.S. 20 is the turnoff to Suttle Lake and the elegant new Lodge at Suttle Lake (13300 U.S. 20, 541/595-2628, www.thelodgeatsuttlelake.com, $130 and up), where a Native American theme predominates. The least expensive accommodations are in newly built but rustic (and very clean) cabins that share a central bathhouse; lodge rooms and waterfront cabins are much more posh. Elegant dinners ($19–38) are offered in the lodge.
