House renters, budget diners, and picnickers can take advantage of the excellent produce and impressive (for a coastal market) grocery section at Manzanita Grocery & Deli (193 Laneda Ave., until 8 p.m.). One block away, Mother Nature’s Natural Foods Store (298 Laneda Ave., 10 a.m.–7 p.m. Mon.–Sat.) stocks natural groceries, coffees and teas, bulk foods, wine, and beer.

Stop at Manzanita News & Espresso (500 Laneda Ave., 503/368-7450, 7:30 a.m.–2 p.m. daily, $2–5) for coffee, a pastry, and a magazine (there are lots to choose from, and the selection is anything but generic).

The local bakery, Bread and Ocean (154 Laneda Ave., 503/368-5823, 7:30 a.m.–2 p.m. Wed.–Sat., 8 a.m.–2 p.m. Sun., $4–9) makes sandwiches as well as cinnamon rolls. If you’ve rented a house in Manzanita but don’t feel like cooking for the gang, Bread and Ocean offers catering of dinner items.

Left Coast Siesta (288 Laneda Ave., 503/368-7997, 11:30 a.m.–8 p.m. Mon.–Sat., noon–7 p.m. Sun., closed Mon.–Tues. winter, $6–8) specializes in design-your-own burritos, the perfect takeout for a filling lunch or dinner. Options include spicy beef, spicy chicken, tequila-lime chicken, or black beans to put into a selection of flavored tortillas. It also serves tacos and enchiladas. And if you like it caliente, this is the place for you: Left Coast Siesta stocks a hot sauce bar with 200-plus different types of the hot stuff, many available to purchase by the jar.

Just a couple of blocks from the beach, Marzano’s (60 Laneda Ave., 503/368-3663, 4–8:30 p.m. Sun.–Mon. and Thurs., 4–9 p.m. Fri., noon–9 p.m. Sat., large pies mostly $20–25) serves the area’s best slices of gourmet pizza. The roasted vegetable pizza is recommended, and the smoked prosciutto with aged Montegrappa cheese is another winner. The understated decor here is dominated by reproductions of French advertising posters.

Up near U.S. 101, Terra Cotta Cafe (725 Manzanita Ave., 503/368-3700, 5 p.m.–close Wed.–Sat., main courses $11–20) offers French-influenced dining with charmingly low-key ambience. Parchment poached salmon is served with apples and blue cheese, while lamb chops are served with cranberry-jalapeño sauce.
