The most authentically Parisian of Portland’s French restaurants is Carafe (200 SW Market St., 503/248-0004, www.carafebistro.com, 11 a.m.–10 p.m. Mon.–Thurs., 11 a.m.–11 p.m. Fri., 5–11 p.m. Sat., $18–22), which, despite its location at the base of a business tower, manages nonetheless to seem très français. The tile-floored, Toulouse Lautrec–postered interior offers a friendly mellow atmosphere in which to enjoy chef-owner Pascal Sauton’s traditional French bistro cooking. All your French favorites are here—appetizers such as escargot and steak tartare, and main dishes like duck confit and rosemary braised lamb.
