Zilla (1806 NE Alberta St., 503/336-4104, www.zillasake.com, 5 p.m.–midnight Mon.–Sat., sushi and rolls $4–11) offers something unique in Portland: over 50 different types of sake available by the pour and bottle, including rare Daiginjo sake, sparkling “champagne” sake, and rice wines from SakéOne, brewed in the Portland suburbs by the only sake producer outside Japan.

This little Alberta Street gem has fun with Portland’s reuse-recycle mandate (the bar is a converted pool-table slate) and also offers good sushi, sashimi, and appetizers—servers can help you pair sake and sushi flights. Monday evenings bring free Japanese movies to Zilla, and there’s live music on Friday evenings.

There are myriad sushi joints in NE Portland, but our favorite is Bluefin Sushi (4138 NE Broadway, 503/288-3644, 11 a.m.–9 p.m. Mon.–Fri., noon–9 p.m. Sat., rolls $7–14), a hole-in-the-wall with extra-fresh sashimi and tasty rolls.
