U-pick aficionados flock to Sauvie Island on the Columbia for peaches, apples, pumpkins, raspberries, and strawberries. This rural retreat is about 10 miles from downtown Portland via U.S. 30. If the pickings are slim, superlative bird-watching and a nudist beach are the island’s other claims to fame.
A longtime truck farm is the Pumpkin Patch (16511 NW Gillihan Rd., 503/621-3874), with abundant vegetables in season, plus horse-drawn tours of the pumpkins near Halloween for the tots and a corn maze for the older kids.
